In most of our service area, walls up to roughly four feet can be built to manufacturer specification without a stamped engineering plan. Anything taller, or any wall holding a surcharge such as a driveway or structure above it, should be engineered. We tell you upfront which category your project falls into and coordinate the engineering when it is needed.
Most of our walls use segmental concrete block from manufacturers like Unilock, which gives you a wide range of colors and textures with predictable structural performance. We also build natural stone and boulder walls when the look calls for it.
Almost always water and base preparation. Without drainage behind the wall, saturated soil creates pressure that pushes block outward. Without a properly excavated and compacted base, the wall settles unevenly. Both problems are entirely avoidable.
Yes, and it usually should. Integrated steps make terraced areas genuinely usable, and low-voltage lighting built into the cap or face turns the wall into a feature after dark instead of a shadow.
A small garden wall is often a two to three day project. A larger terraced or reinforced wall with excavation and hauling typically runs one to two weeks. You get a realistic schedule with your estimate.
