This one started from the ground up. The existing bed was a mix of overgrown lilacs, peonies, and old stumps - nothing worth saving. We pulled everything out, hand-weeded the entire area down to clean soil, and started fresh. That's the only way to do this kind of job right.

Once the bed was clear, we laid out the new plant design before a single hole was dug. The plan called for 11 hydrangeas alternating pink and white, Golden Globe varieties anchoring each end, 10 Jack Frost plants, 6 ornamental onions, and 9 Strawberry Daylilies woven through for color and movement. Every variety was chosen with purpose - some for structure, some for seasonal interest, and some just to keep things from looking flat all summer.

After planting, we locked everything in with heavy-duty weed fabric and a pre-emergent application before laying down about 1.5 inches of premium dark mulch. That combination is what separates a bed that looks good for one season from one that stays manageable year after year. The mulch holds moisture, regulates soil temperature, and cuts down on the weeding that usually drives homeowners crazy by midsummer.

What we ended up with is a long, structured bed that has real visual depth - layered heights, varied textures, and color that will rotate through the season. The client wanted something that looked intentional without being high-maintenance. That's exactly the target we aimed for, and the result speaks for itself.

This is the kind of work we do a lot of in Palatine and throughout the Barrington area. Full resets, plant design, mulch installation - jobs where we're not just filling in gaps but actually building something that holds up. If your beds are looking tired or overgrown, starting fresh is usually the smartest move you can make.
